How Coach Training Works

Getting Started · Lesson 1 of 3All lessons

3 min read

Read this page first if you've just been enrolled in coach training. It covers what training is, the steps in order, how to check in at the kiosk, and the one thing you confirm before you start.

What this is

Coach training is how you learn to coach at GJJ. You work through four stages alongside a lead coach, Shadow, Assist, Co-lead, and Solo with supervision, and you do the reading that goes with them. When you've done the work and the head coach agrees you're ready, you get cleared for that track.

Coach training is unpaid training for you, not a job offer. The gym puts account credit on your account as a thank-you for the reading and sessions you complete (the table below has the amounts). Credit is not wages and is never paid out as cash. Finishing training doesn't guarantee a coaching job, and coaching itself is paid work only once you're hired.

The steps

  1. You're enrolled. Someone at the gym set you up. If the gym has your number, you'll also have a text with a link to this page.
  2. Do the prep reading: the Coach Code of Conduct, GJJ Pedagogy, and the Coaches Guide. Then do your track's reading, which the Onboarding Roadmap lists.
  3. Confirm the terms further down this page.
  4. Check in at the kiosk as "In training", or book your sessions from the hub.
  5. Work through Shadow, Assist, Co-lead, and Solo. A full track is 4, 6, 6, and 4 sessions. If you've already been cleared on the other track, or you're already a coach, you do the short track: 2, 4, 4, and 2.
  6. Do the solo-readiness reading before you start Solo.
  7. Get cleared.

None of this is a race. Any stage can be extended if you or the lead coach don't feel ready to move on. The minimums are firm; the pace is yours.

Checking in

Training sessions happen during regular classes, so you check in the way a coach does:

  1. At the kiosk, tap "I'm coaching this" on the class.
  2. Pick your name from the list.
  3. Pick "In training".

The kiosk lists you only once your reading is done and you've confirmed the terms below. If your name isn't there, that's almost always the reason. The "Your training" card on the coaches home shows which one is missing. You can also book sessions ahead of time from the hub.

Training credit

What you doAccount credit
Shadow, each session$10
Assist, each session$15
Co-lead, each session$17.50
Solo with supervision, each session$20
Prep reading (once, ever)$75
Track reading (each track)$25

One full track: $415. Both tracks: $630.

Confirm the terms

Read these, then confirm. It takes one tap, and you only do it once.

The training terms

Coach training is unpaid. It is training for you, not a job.

Finishing training does not guarantee you will be hired as a coach.

The account credit you earn along the way is a thank-you from the gym, not wages. It goes on your account and can be used for dues, gear, or anything else we sell. It is never paid out as cash.

If we hire you, coaching is paid work and you will be set up on payroll before your first paid class.

Want the full detail?

The Coach Onboarding Roadmap has the reading lists for both tracks, what each stage asks of you, and what happens after you're cleared.
